  • NEW DELHI: Former Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's mortal remains will be handed over to the anatomy department of IPGMER SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, as the leader had pledged to donate his body to Ganadarpan, an NGO in the city, for the purpose of scientific research.

Bhattacharjee had signed a bond on March 8, 2006, to pledge his body to Ganadarpan in the presence of state industry minister Nirupam Sen and CPM leader Madan Ghosh at the Alimuddin Street party headquarters.

Bhattacharjee passed away on Thursday morning at his home in South Kolkata at the age of 80.

He had been unwell for some time, suffering from respiratory problems that led to frequent hospitalizations.

Last year, Bhattacharjee had to be put on life support after contracting pneumonia.

Similarly, former Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu had also pledged his body to Ganadarpan for medical research after taking an oath on April 4, 2003. His eyes were donated immediately after his death.
