  • Kolkata: A bike accident last month at the Mukundapur-Bypass crossing in the Survey Park police station area, that claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy riding a sports bike at a high speed, has led Kolkata traffic police to launch a series of steps on the EM Bypass from Thursday that are aimed at curbing bike accidents on this stretch.

This will include setting up convex mirrors for greater visibility, increasing the number of speed guns, ensuring pedestrian barriers and relaying lane markings for merging traffic.Since the minor’s death, the stretch has witnessed four other major accidents on this stretch.

The traffic department, with help from other agencies, has set up convex mirrors across all metro stations on this stretch. Cops have also initiated the process for tenders for setting up the speed cameras. Currently, advanced technology cameras are installed at seven locations on the Bypass to curb over speeding. But four more spots have been identified where cops will be setting up the new speed cameras. However, the exact number of cameras to be installed at these four locations has not yet been finalized.
