  • In a testament to his humanitarian spirit, former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had donated his eyes and body for medical research. His mortal remains will be handed over to state government-run NRS Medical College and Hospital here on Friday for research work, a CPI(M) official.

The body of Bhattacharjee, wrapped with the CPI(M)’s red flag, was moved out of his frugal two-room residence at Palm Avenue in south Kolkata to Peace World on Thursday for people to pay their respects.

Bhattacharjee’s wife Mira walked along with the hearse with CPI(M) leaders and hundreds of his admirers cutting across political lines accompanying her.

On Friday at 10.30 am, the mortal remains will be taken to the West Bengal Assembly, from where they will be taken to CPI(M) state headquarters Muzaffar Ahmed Bhavan on Alimuddin Street, where he spent most of his political life. The party office will remain open throughout the day for people to pay their last respects.

The body will be thereafter taken to the state headquarters of DYFI, the CPI(M)’s youth wing, following which the last journey of the mortal remains will be undertaken. The body will be handed over to NRS Medical College and Hospital for research.
