  • SODEPUR/KOLKATA: Loved and admired by all neighbours and cousins alike, the tragic death of the 31-year-old second year post-graduate trainee of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital has sent shockwaves across the Sodepur neighbourhood near Kolkata on Friday.

"We have lost a bright medical student who worked tirelessly alongside her parents to advance in her career. The condition in which her body was found is horrifying. We demand a thorough investigation and the immediate arrest of the culprits," said Priyanka Chakraborty, a neighbour.

Others said the young girl, who used to travel to the hospital in a car she recently bought, was not only academically gifted but was also known for her kindness and good behaviour in the locality.

"She has been a bright student since her childhood. Besides, she was very fond of looking after animals and gardening. She also struggled hard to make herself a post graduate medical student. We were also treated by our beloved 'junior doctor' whenever she came home on leave," said Kakoli Ghosh, anotehr neighbour.

Her mother told TOI on Friday that she last spoke to her over phone around 11 pm on Thursday.

"She said she had ordered food and told us to finish dinner as well. Little did I know that it would be our last conversation. They killed my daughter. She was my only child. We worked hard to make her a doctor. My daughter is gone. I will never be happy again," the mother cried outside the hospital.

"I saw my daughter lying in a pool of blood and she was almost stripped. Multiple deep injuries were also found on her body. I also spoke to her classmates and colleagues in detail who already informed me about her entire duty on Thursday night. I suspect my daughter was raped and murdered but authorities initially tried to cover up the real fact," her father said.

Sanjib Mukherjee, another neighbour, said they were still unsure of how to console her parents. The family, he said, had been living in the neighbourhood for over two decades. The girl's father was a petty tailor who struggled hard to run his family and raise his child to become a doctor.

They had also restored their old house. "Her father rose from a tailor to a successful garments manufacturer. His daughter was on the verge of completing her PG studies and was seen as a beacon of hope," Mukherjee said.

A cousin said it was around 8.30 am that the family received a call from the hospital and was told about her death. "She was very good at her studies but mostly kept to herself," he said while escorting her mother out of the hospital.
