  • During an event in Jhargram, CM Mamata Banerjee urged for peaceful coexistence and justice. She announced various development projects and expressed hopes for Olympic success from local athletes JHARGRAM: Pledge to coexist peacefully with people from all the communities and fight for what is right, CM Mamata Banerjee said in Jhargram on Friday. Taking part in an event to mark International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples at Jhargram stadium, the CM said: "Durga Puja is coming, and clubs and committees have already got the funds for it.All of you celebrate it peacefully."

    Recalling that the Quit India Movement was launched by Mahatma Gandhi on Aug 9, Banerjee said undivided Midnapore was the seat of the freedom struggle and the Tamralipta govt was formed before India gained Independence.

    The CM announced the construction of a market over 1 acre of land. "People from self-help groups can sell their goods here. There will be a movie theatre, a shopping mall and a community hall. We will implement this in all 23 districts. The tenders will be released soon."

    Banerjee said it was her "hope, belief and vision" that one day, students of Jhargram's Bengal Archery Academy would go to the Olympics and bring home medals.

    "I remember the Olympic games that took place over 20 years ago; back then I was the youth and sports minister. I had a vision of establishing an academy and preparing athletes so that after 20-21 years, they could earn global fame and respect," she said.

    Without naming wrestler Vinesh Phogat, Banerjee said: "The girl who could have brought a gold medal was unable to. I am very sad about it. The people of India will learn the truth about why she was deprived in the coming days. I congratulate her on her efforts."

    Listing development works undertaken by govt, the CM said: "Today, we have inaugurated and laid the foundation of 454 schemes worth Rs 247.2 lakh crore. We also have a new Mahakuma Bhavan in Jhargram that was built at a cost of Rs 50 crore. In Purulia too, we have spent Rs 15 crore for the sub-division office."

    "Rs 22.1 crore has been spent to construct the 14 km Keshiary-Kulboni road. Rs 52.4 crore has been spent on other roads too. For clean water supply, Rs 16.43 lakh has been spent. We had given funds to Kanak Durga Mandir. Now, we have also given Rs 72.3 lakh for the renovation of the adjacent Vishnu Mandir," Banerjee said, adding: "We have also given Rs 48 crore for a flyover in Bankura's Chatna. A 22-km road in Purulia was also renovated today at a cost of Rs 61.67 crore."

    "Around 49,000 adivasis have been given forest patta... We have appealed to Centre for recognition of Sarna and Sari religion. We are constructing a school for Ol Chiki-speaking people and have given official recognition to the language," she said.
