  • Mamata Banerjee KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Sunday that her government will seek the death penalty for those accused in the sexual assault and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor, whose body was discovered at a government hospital in north Kolkata last Friday. The case will be pursued in a fast track court.

    The preliminary autopsy report indicated that the woman doctor had been sexually abused before being killed.The chief minister also expressed her support for junior doctors who have been protesting and demanding tough punishment for the accused.

    "I endorse the demands being made by the junior doctors," Banerjee stated in an interview with a Bengali news channel.

    Banerjee also mentioned that the West Bengal government is open to any agency, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), conducting an investigation if there is a demand for it. She described the incident as "gruesome and despicable."

    The chief minister urged junior doctors at state-run hospitals to continue providing healthcare services while holding their protests.

    Earlier, Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal assured that the police would ensure the highest punishment for the guilty party. He emphasized the commitment of the police force to bringing justice in the case.

    "We will make sure the accused in the case gets 'the highest punishment' if he is found guilty," Goyal stated.
