  • Sanjay’s mother Malati Roy KOLKATA: Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, appointed in 2019, has been a rogue figure and a troublemaker for his family, his force and even neighbours.

"I have been in trouble ever since I gave birth to my son," said Malati Roy, as she stood at the entrance of her small residence located on Sambhu Nath Pandit Street in the heart of south Kolkata on Saturday. However, she insisted, "My son cannot commit such an act... it's so difficult to believe." A few hours ago, the cops had arrested her son Sanjay for allegedly raping and murdering an RG Kar Hospital second-year postgraduate trainee in the wee hours of Friday.

According to police sources, Sanjay had joined as a civic volunteer in Kolkata Police in the disaster management group. But knocking at "the right channels" helped him shift to the Welfare Cell Wing. However, Sanjay started claiming that he was the PA of an influential cop. To some others, he claimed he was a home guard. He had reportedly being spotted regularly at the 4th battalion of KP, a posting that helped him being deputed at the RG Kar Hospital outpost.

The security guards at the hospital reported that the arrested young man regularly visited the hospital. He is a civic volunteer by profession and is suspected to have been involved in brokerage activities at the hospital, said a source.

Initial investigations also revealed that the accused might have been addicted to pornography, his mobile filled with objectionable videos and photographs. He had been often pulled up for being disrespectful towards female colleagues, claimed police sources.

During questioning, despite admitting to the crime, the accused showed no sign of remorse, according to investigators. Instead, during interrogation, he reportedly said, "If you want to hang me, go ahead."

The youth arrested in the RG Kar case is a civic volunteer by profession. He was initially detained on Friday night after being identified through the hospital's CCTV footage. After questioning, he was arrested by the police on Saturday morning. It is alleged that the accused was seen entering the hospital early on Friday morning. He was inside for about 30 to 35 minutes. Investigators believe that being a civic volunteer allowed him to enter and exit the hospital without any issues.

Sanjay, claimed his mother Malati and neighbours, had last visited his family members on the day of Holi. She claimed that Sanjay hardly ever called up to know how she or her daughters were surviving. "I lived with my four daughters, one son and husband. My son got duly married but my daughter-in-law died of cancer. He hasn't even come home for a long time. My daughters take care of my expenses," said Malati.

On Saturday, as news of the arrest broke, a group of young men was seen gathered around Sanjay's home. Asked about Sanjay, their immediate neighbour was quick to reply, "We don't have much contact."

According to neighbours, Malati's words of pain regarding her son come from the fact that he had already married at least four times. "He had divorced thrice while one wife reportedly died of cancer. Sanjay has four sisters, one of whom has passed away. He rarely kept any contact with them," said a neighbour. "Sanjay was a menace whenever he stayed at Sambhu Nath Pandit Street, especially when drunk. He would kick neighbours' doors and swear at us at night. We want him to be handed the severest punishment at the earliest," said Kamala Das, a neighbour.
