  • Kolkata: Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal said they were “sad and anguished” over the rape and murder of the second-year post-graduate trainee at R G Kar Hospital.

“We are concerned, worried, and angry. We are with the family, the doctors, the students. Whatever needs to be done we are doing. We are carrying out a very transparent probe,” he said on Saturday.Without mentioning that the arrested accused was a KP civic volunteer, Goyal said he would be treated as an “accused of the highest order”. “No matter who the criminal is, to us, he is a criminal. A case has been filed under the charges of rape and murder. This is an incident of murder following sexual assault. It is extremely unfortunate. We are sorry. We stand with the family and the doctors,” said Goyal at a news meet, where the additional police commissioner was also present.

Goyal said KP had no objection to a separate agency probing the case. “The family can have the investigation conducted by another agency, if they wish. The guilty party is the highest criminal. We will ensure maximum punishment,” he said.

Listing the sequence of events on Friday, Goyal said, “Yesterday (Aug 9) around 10:30 am, the Tala PS received the information. Police and homicide department officers reached the spot and an inquest was held in the presence of a judicial magistrate, witnesses, and parents,” he said. The post-mortem, held by a board of three doctors, two of them women, was videographed.”

He said a seven-member SIT was formed with officers from the homicide section of and Tala PS and led by DC DD special and supervised by additional CP (I) Murlidhar Sharma. On the allegation that the victim’s body was taken away without alerting the family, Goyal said, “You all saw the family was present.”
