Cancer survivor dies in accident while trying to save stray

Kolkata: Debojit Roy, a 23-year-old cancer survivor and resident of Shantinagar area off Sukantanagar, died in a freak bike accident at Salt Lake’s KB-KC block on Friday night as he tried to save a stray dog that had come on his way.
Police said Roy was undergoing bone marrow cancer treatment and released from hospital only a few days back. On Friday, he chatted with his friends till 8.30 pm and later went off despite his friends requesting him to stay back.He told them that he was leaving for some work in Salt Lake.
When he was riding a motorcycle, a couple of stray dogs appeared in front of his vehicle. He tried to manoeuvre but lost control over the motorcycle and it skidded off. He fell on the ground. Prior to the fall, his bike had accidentally hit one of the strays that also died. Roy suffered critical injuries on the head and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.
Locals said some stretches in the area remains inadequately lit sometimes. They also alleged that the the condition of roads on several stretches has also deteriorated.
