NEW DELHI: Doctors and medical professionals in Kerala will hold a protest on Monday across government medical colleges in response to the recent sexual assault and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in a Kolkata state-run hospital.
The protest, led by the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA), aims to condemn the tragic incident and call for better safety measures for healthcare workers.
The KGMCTA, in a statement on Sunday, expressed strong condemnation of the murder of the postgraduate student. The association highlighted concerns regarding the safety of women doctors, particularly those on night and emergency duty.
The KGMCTA emphasized the need for governments to ensure a safe working environment.
"The safety of women doctors, who are part of the night duty and emergency department duty work, has always been a matter of concern," the association stated. "It is the responsibility of the respective governments to create a safe working environment so that they can perform their work fearlessly.
"
The association also announced that it would join a nationwide protest by doctors' organizations demanding workplace safety for doctors and medicos.
Dr. Rosenara Beegum, the state president of the KGMCTA, confirmed that medical teachers, postgraduate doctors, house surgeons, and medical students would take part in the protests at all Government Medical Colleges in Kerala on Monday.
