  • Kolkata: The centralized portal for undergraduate admissions received 2.5 lakh applications from 32,000 applicants till Sunday for second phase of admission process. Of the 32,000 applicants, 17,000 are new.

The second phase of admissions was rolled out on Aug 7. It has been found that over 2.5lakh applications were received from 32,000 candidates. There were 15,000 names cancelled after the first phase of admissions.

A state higher education department officer said, “The figure shows that this time students have been applying for at least 6-7 colleges that we had said earlier. Those who had made mistakes while choosing preferences are quite clear about filling up preferences now. So, we are expecting a good number of students in this round as well.”

Following the first round of admissions, 3.7 lakh undergraduate seats were filled up. In the second round only 1.2 lakh seats were unreserved while around 5 lakh were for reserved categories.

State higher education department officials said that the continuous effort to reach out to the students to bring them into the higher education system impacted the second round of admissions. College and even school staff members were being engaged to make calls to students who had passed the Plus II exams. “The entire department has been engaged to run the system smoothly. Over 17,000 fresh applicants applied in the second round of admissions and we are hopeful that this number will increase till the portal closes on Aug 23,” the officer added.

TOI had reported earlier that the undergraduate courses across colleges that are under the CAP started first semester classes with around 50% seats being vacant. The principal of a Kolkata college said, “There are huge number of seats lying vacant in several courses. So, we are not very hopeful about filling up those vacancies because many of these seats are vacant in reserved categories. In that case, in the second round there is very little chance of getting applications for these courses.”

The portal will receive applications till Aug 23. The second round, which will end on Sep 7, will also have an upgrade round.
