  • Kolkata: Patients were in the lurch at RG Kar Medical College on Sunday as junior doctors continued their ceasework and vowed to carry on the protest till all their demands are met.

Four-year-old Arian Molla from Bhangar was brought to the hospital with a fractured right hand on Saturday night but was refused admission. He was referred to NRS Hospital instead. His mother Muslima Bibi had to rush to NRS with the child. “My son is in acute pain but we have been told nothing can be done here as the doctors are on ceasework.”

Arian’s grandfather, Chhaba Ali, said: “We have come a long way and are now heading to NRS Hospital. We don’t know where and how his treatment will start.”

Razia Bibi, suffering from age-related issues, was referred from Barasat Hospital to RG Kar on Sunday. But she was denied admission. Razia was sitting in an ambulance in front of the trauma care building.Ibadat Mandal, her family member, said, “We came from Berachampa in an ambulance and now we don’t know where to go.”

Rajat Kar came with a breathing trouble but was refused admission. He said he was worried about his treatment that needs to begin soon.

Manju Jadav, who stays very close to the hospital, came to the emergency along with her husband, Umesh Jadav, with an acute pain in her ear. She, too, was refused admission.

Suresh Purokait, another patient, had a fracture in one leg and has been in the hospital for the last few days. He had one operation a few days ago, and another surgery was to be held, but the date is now uncertain. Another patient’s family member, Prabhati Adhikari, said, “My son is admitted here with a fracture at the hip joint. I came to speak to the doctors, but no one was there to talk to. The reason for which these doctors are protesting is absolutely justified but we are in a spot.”

The emergency building and ticket counter were found empty on Sunday, and those who came at the emergency for treatment were either referred to other hospitals or released after treatment. Arindam Ghosh, who took his mother to the emergency as her sugar level had dropped, said, “My mother was treated even during the movement. I have nothing to say. My mother is feeling much better now.”
