• ‘You know what happened in RG Kar?’: Civics volunteer threatens West Bengal lady doctor, arrested

  • Amid protests against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, another civic volunteer who allegedly threatened a lady doctor at Bhatar state general hospital on Friday night has been arrested, the police said. The accused, Sushanta Roy, will be produced before the court on Sunday morning.

    According to the police, Roy had come to the hospital in Purba Bardhaman district with complaints of stomach ache and vertigo and the duty doctor, Sutapa Naskar, at Bhatar state general hospital examined and gave him preliminary treatment. “After that, he continuously irritated me. When I protested, he said, you know what happened in RG Kar? I will do it here,” said Dr Naskar.

    Amandeep, Burdwan district police superintendent said, “We arrested the accused civic volunteer after getting complaint from the lady doctor.”

    Following the Bhatar hospital incident, the doctors and other workers staged a protest in front of the hospital and gheraoed the Bhatar police station on Saturday.

    District Deputy Chief Medical Officer Subarna Goswami said, “This is very unfortunate incident. He should be given exemplary punishment.”

    The latest incident has fuelled the safety concerns of health officials in West Bengal, especially at a time when a wave of protests has spread across state-run medical colleges and hospitals in West Bengal demanding justice for the victim of RG Kar hospital rape and murder case and enhanced security measures on hospital premises.
