  • Kolkata Police investigating the alleged rape and murder of a young junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital said the preliminary findings suggest that the crime was committed “in a spontaneous manner” and the arrested accused, Sanjay Roy, was “intoxicated”.

Sources in the police also said the murder and rape likely took place between 3 am and 6 am Friday. Sources in the hospital had earlier told The Indian Express that the woman doctor was on duty until 2 am on Friday.

Sources said police are not ruling out the possibility that the woman was first killed and then raped. “After going through the autopsy report, circumstantial evidence, and other material evidence, we will be able to conclude whether she was first raped and then murdered or vice-versa,” said a police officer involved in the probe.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, accompanied by DCP (North) Abhishek Gupta and Additional Commissioner Santosh Pandey Sunday examined the crime scene.

The seminar room, where the woman’s body was found, has two entries. “In one of the entry points, no suspicious movement was noted in CCTV footage, while in the other, we noticed some suspicious movement involving Roy. We found evidence against him and arrested him. We have seized his shoes and a few of his belongings as part of probe,” said a police officer involved in the probe.

“He (Roy) was a habitual drinker. He had no relationship with anyone of us,” the sister of the accused said. “We sisters take care of our mother. We don’t know how he got the civic volunteer job,” she said.

Meanwhile, Additional Commissioner of Police Murlidhar Sharma Sunday visited the woman doctor’s house and met her parents. He said the police handed over a copy of the postmortem report to the family. “We explained and briefed them everything about our investigation so far. We also informed them about our next course of action. The family said they have faith in us,” he said.

    Hospital chief removed

The government Sunday removed hospital superintendent Sanjay Vashisth. Prof Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, dean of student affairs of the hospital has been given additional charge of superintendent. Kolkata Police has also decided to remove an ACP-rank officer from charge of the hospital. Goyal conveyed this to the protesting students.
