  • Kolkata: Jadavpur University (JU) has slipped from the fourth position to the ninth among the top-100 universities in the country in the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2024 (NIRF 24). Calcutta University (CU), which was in the 12th position last year, has slipped to 18th.

IIT-Madras tops the NIRF 24 in the overall category and IIT-Kharagpur bagged the sixth spot this year.Last year, IIT-Kharagpur was at the seventh position. JU has ranked 17th and CU is placed at the 26th position.

This year, NIRF introduced a new category — state public university — where JU bagged the second position and CU was placed fourth.

Interim JU VC Bhaskar Gupta said, “The university has gone through a tumultuous time without a VC. In spite of that, we are among the top-10 universities and the credit goes to our teachers, students and staffers. I am confident we will perform better next year.” A senior professor hinted that JU slipped because of poor performance in the regional diversity category.

Interim CU VC Santa Datta De said, “We are taking it as an achievement that came when we are continuously fighting against several hurdles on and off campus. All the stakeholders contributed to achieve this rank.”

In the ranking of colleges, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College has earned the highest position in the state, ranking third all over the country, jointly with St Stephens’s College, followed by St Xavier’s College at sixth, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira at 17th and Ramakrishna Mission Residential College at 24th.

Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College, Rahara, principal Swami Kamalasthananda said, “We are happy to have bagged the joint third position across the country. This achievement was possible because of the efforts of our stakeholders.”

St Xavier’s College principal Father Dominic Savio said, “This recognition of our efforts is a confirmation that our progress is going according to plan. These rankings are important as they measure and reward, and also provide us the yardstick, incentive and the structure to prepare for the future.”

Among the top five institutions in law, West Bengal University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, has come fourth. IIM-Calcutta came fifth among the management schools across the country. Among the top-100 engineering institutes, IIT-Kharagpur has earned the fifth spot, followed by JU at 12th, down from last year’s 10th, IIEST Shibpur at 49th and NIT Durgapur at 44th.
