  • Students and junior doctors stop a senior doctor’s car from entering the CNMC campus on Monday KOLKATA: Students, interns and junior doctors of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital staged a stir on the campus against the return of their former medical superintendent cum vice-principal (MSVP) Sandip Ghosh as their principal on Monday. There was tension on the CNMC campus as the students and interns locked the principal's room in the evening to dissuade him from taking charge.

Ghosh stepped down as principal at R G Kar Medical College following widespread protests over the incident of a trainee doctor's rape and murder on the campus. As soon as it became public that Ghosh's resignation was not accepted and he would take over as the new principal of the CNMC, the students erupted in protests, remaining firm that they would not allow him to enter the campus and assume charge.

Around 500 students, interns and junior doctors of CNMC marched to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in protest against the govt's decision. Some of them returned to the CNMC campus in the evening and held a meeting where it was decided that they would keep vigil on the campus day in and day out to keep Ghosh at bay.

TOI visited the CNMC campus on Monday evening and found that students and interns had shut the gate of the administrative block that houses the boys' hostel. The agitating students blocked the entrance of this block with two bikes and even refused entry to a woman doctor's car, which was sent for parking on the hostel campus.

Akash Roy, an agitating student, told TOI: "We have had a very bitter experience with Ghosh when he was our MSVP and after the brutal rape and murder on R G Kar campus, we don't want him at CNMC as our principal. We will leave no stone unturned to prevent him from entering the campus."
