• HC reminds docs of ‘pious obligation’

  • Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court division bench held that the facts and circumstances of the RG Kar rape-murder case warranted appropriate orders without further delay and, in view of the fact that the protests had gone beyond the boundaries of the state and RAF had to be deployed to tackle the agitation at the hospital, it was imperative for the court to instil confidence among the public.

The judges, while appreciating the feelings of the protesters, also observed that doctors had a “pious obligation” to treat patients who come to govt hospitals for treatment.

The bench also directed the superintendent of RG Kar College to file a report on the current infrastructure at the hospital. The Joint Forum of Students and Doctors, which was made a party to the case, was told to file an affidavit with suggestions on the upgrade of hospital infrastructure.
