• CBI files FIR, collects case papers from KP, to start RG Kar probe today

  • Kolkata: The CBI registered an FIR on Tuesday night in connection to the rape and murder of the PGT doctor at R G Kar Hospital, following a Calcutta High Court order. The Special Crime Branch of the New Delhi office of the central investigating agency registered the case late on Tuesday.

    According to a CBI officer, a team from the SCB left for Kolkata on Tuesday night.They were accompanied by medical and forensic experts. The team will start investigations from Wednesday morning. Earlier in the evening, a four-member team of the CBI visited the Tala police station to collect documents on the case from them.

    “Sensitive cases are registered with the New Delhi office and there is nothing new to this. Accordingly, a team was formed and they left for Kolkata by Tuesday night,” said an official.

    The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday handed over the investigation to the CBI and asked Kolkata Police to hand over the documents to the central investigating agency. The court has instructed that the investigation report and collected CCTV footage related to the case be handed over from the police to the CBI.

    The next hearing of the case is slated for three weeks later. The Chief Justice has directed the CBI to submit a progress report on the investigation at the next hearing.
