  • Kolkata: Filmmaker Aparna Sen, who was booed by a section of agitators when she reached RG Kar hospital on Tuesday to express her solidarity with the agitating doctors, questioned why police and hospital authorities had initially claimed that the victim had died by suicide.

A section of protesters called Sen “a sycophant intellectual who had not raised her voice against the savage attack over the last five days” and “had suddenly woken up for publicity”, but she did not react.

“I have not been keeping well. But I have come today as we all must stand together to lodge our protest against such attacks. It is shocking that a civic volunteer had unhindered access to the hospital seminar hall. There should not be a recurrence of similar incidents,” she said.

The veteran filmmaker wondered why the parents of the doctor were initially told by the hospital authorities that she had died by suicide when the body had multiple injuries. “She was raped and killed in a brutal manner. Was there an attempt to hide the truth? The role of police should also be probed,” Sen said.

Singer Pallab Kirtania, who accompanied Sen, added: “The demands of the doctors are justified. We are with them.” R
