  • NEW DELHI: The horrific rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College has shook the conscience of the nation, leading to protests by junior doctors across the country demanding justice for the deceased and her family.

    Where it all began

On Thursday, the trainee doctor, a second-year post-graduate, had a normal evening, dining with juniors and watching the Olympics where Neeraj Chopra won a silver medal. She went to rest around 2am in the seminar hall, considering it safe. But in the morning of August 9, her semi-nude body was found there.

Her father expressed deep concern, alleging that the hospital delayed the investigation, and noted clear signs of rape.

    The outrage

Initially, the assistant superintendent of the hospital informed the victim's parents that she had died by suicide. However, the autopsy later confirmed she was sexually assaulted and murdered. The report, which showed multiple injuries and ruled out suicide, sparked massive public outrage, questioning the initial handling of the case by the authorities, including the police.

    Post-mortem findings

The post-mortem revealed the victim died from smothering and strangulation. She had multiple injuries, including a broken collarbone and deep scratches, suggesting she fought back during the attack. Blood and skin samples under her nails matched those of the accused, indicating a struggle.

    The accused: Sanjay Roy

Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect, has a history of violence against women. The 33-year-old, who allegedly raped and murdered the trainee doctor, was working with Kolkata Police as a civic volunteer. Reports suggest he was addicted to pornography and was disrespectful towards female colleagues. Despite admitting to the crime, Roy showed no remorse.

    The protest

Following the incident, doctors across the country protested, demanding justice and better security. Services in hospitals were disrupted as thousands marched in Kolkata and other cities. The nationwide strike was later called off after the government assured them their demands would be met.

    Political slugfest

The BJP accused West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee of siding with the accused instead of the victim, demanding her resignation. They claimed no woman in the state would feel safe under her leadership.

    Case transferred to CBI

Due to serious flaws and lack of progress in the investigation, the Kolkata high court transferred the case to the CBI, citing a lack of support from local officials.

Questions on the number of perpetrators

Dr Subarna Goswami, who reviewed the autopsy report, questioned the Kolkata Police's claim that a single person was responsible.

The injuries and evidence suggested more than one person may have been involved, though only Sanjay Roy has been arrested so far.

(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
