• KP: Rumours hurting probe

  • Kolkata: “Rumours don’t help but harm probe,” Kolkata Police wrote on its social media page after handing over all probe details to CBI. The force claimed it had tried to do its best in the last four days and will help CBI going ahead. It also said, yet again, that the call of a possible suicide did not go out from the police last Friday — as is being claimed on social media.

The post, though, attracted several critical comments.

The cops also pointed to certain “misinformation” that they claim is either “scientifically” or “legally” impossible.

A source from the Kolkata Police revealed that among the bizarre information doing the rounds is the claim that semen from three individuals was found on the doctor’s body. “It is impossible to distinguish semen from three individuals with the naked eye during an autopsy,” a cop said.

The second claim is on the exact quantity of semen recovered. Medical science states what an adult male is capable of and what is doing the rounds is scientifically impossible, the source added.

“Thirdly, it has been spread on social media that the woman’s collarbone and pelvic guard were broken. Based on the autopsy report, we know she did not have any broken bone. Fourthly, there is a rumour that a police officer offered a large sum of money to silence the father of the murdered doctor. The fact is that, following the Nirbhaya case, the state is obligated to provide financial compensation to the families of victims in cases of murder, acid attacks, rape and molestation,” the officer added.
