  • Wes Benagal CM Mamata Banerjee NEW DELHI: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee addressed the media regarding the Kolkata doctor rape incident, stating, "As far as the information I have, I will not blame the students. The incident is very unfortunate, we still say that they should be hung... We have given all the documents, till the time our police were investigating, nothing was leaked..."

    She expressed her condolences to the victim's family on behalf of herself and the people of Bengal.Banerjee emphasized the severity of the crime, asserting that the only appropriate punishment for the culprit is hanging, which would serve as a deterrent to others. However, she cautioned against punishing any innocent individuals.

    Late at night, a group of approximately 40 individuals, claiming to be protesters, forcibly entered the hospital premises. They proceeded to vandalize various areas, including the emergency department, nursing station, and medicine store.

    The group also damaged CCTV cameras and ransacked a stage where junior doctors had been protesting since August 9.

    In response to the incident, law enforcement authorities have taken nine individuals into custody for their suspected involvement in the vandalism and disruption at the hospital.
