  • An 80-year-old female doctor from Kolkata on Wednesday slammed Mamata Banerjee over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

In a video posted online on the social media site Facebook, the doctor said, “I am an 80-year-old doctor and I am from the 1962 batch of Nil Ratan Sirkar Medical College. We fought Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi to establish a union in the college.”

She added that 500 doctors of her age demanded only three things. She said, “Firstly, we will not allow this to be displaced, we have sought international support and we have got it… We will show the world what we are going through in Bengal.”

“The people behind them (the people who are orchestrating such crimes/shielding criminals) are not only uneducated or drunk culprits,” she said.

Terming the accused just “a stooge”, she said, “How dare they name Dhananjay (who was hanged after being convicted in a rape case during CPI(M) era)? They are making an another Dhananjay.”

Demanding for a fair justice, the doctor said, “On behalf of the doctors, I’m telling you… we will take this to the world…we will get rid of Mamata Banerjee.”

A 31-year-old woman junior doctor was found dead at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital on August 9, triggering a political firestorm in the state. The doctor, a postgraduate student, was found in the building’s seminar hall.

On Wednesday, ahead of the 78th Independence Day, West Bengal saw men, women, political leaders, and celebrities take over the streets, crossings, and thoroughfares demanding safe spaces for women in the city. The people who hit the streets holding candles had responded to a call for protest on social media, described as ‘For women’s independence on the midnight of Independence’. The sound of conch shells reverberated amid the sombre mood of those who “reclaimed the night”.
