• ZSI’s forensic centre to curb wildlife crime

  • Kolkata: Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) inaugurated the its state-of-the-art Centre for Wildlife Forensics and Conservation Genomics on Friday. “This facility at ZSI is a step to combat wildlife crime and protect India’s rich biodiversity. It is equipped with the latest genomic technologies to provide critical support to law enforcement agencies and set new benchmarks in conservation science and play a vital role in safeguarding our natural heritage,” said Leena Nanda, secretary, union ministry of environment, forest and climate change, after launching the facility.

    Speaking about the centre, ZSI director Dhriti Banerjee said, “For us it’s a milestone to have something as important as this – a centre that integrates the latest advancements in genomic technology and forensic science.We are not only enhancing our ability to trace and prosecute wildlife criminals but also setting new standards for conservation research in the region.” She announced the appointment of ZSI scientist Mukesh Thakur as the centre’s coordinator.
