  • While the BJP was staging a protest Friday in West Bengal’s Shyambazar in Kolkata, alleging that the TMC is “destroying evidence” in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case, more than a hundred party supporters got into a scuffle with the state police, who detained a number of BJP workers during the agitation.

The state president of BJP Mahila Morcha, Falguni Patra, alleged that police “mercilessly beat us”. “Police of the undemocratic Mamata Banerjee government don’t allow any protest,” she said.

On Friday, the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) called for a 12-hour strike against the vandalism that happened at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Supporting it, the BJP organised their protest on Friday morning. Police allegedly broke their stage.

BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul said, “TMC is trying to destroy the evidence. We are protesting that. Across the nation, people are protesting the incident… Even after that, our state government is sleeping.”

On August 10, a doctor’s body found at RG Kar Medical College sparked protests nationwide. On Wednesday night, a mob entered the RG Kar Hospital campus, resulting in significant damage. Security officials intervened to disperse the crowd.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also called for a Saturday rally to demand capital punishment for the accused

Kolkata police arrested a civic volunteer named Sanjay Ray in the rape-murder case and on Monday, the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI investigation into the incident. 24 people have been arrested so far in connection with the vandalism of the hospital.
