  • Kolkata CP Vineet Goyal NEW DELHI: West Bengal police commissioner Vineet Goyal has urged the public to disregard "rumours" and "narratives" surrounding the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. He emphasised the importance of trusting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is currently handling the investigation. His comments come amid various speculations about the case, including false claims that the police had informed the victim's family of a suicide and had found 150 grams of semen in her body.Top Picks For YouKolkata doctor rape-murder: Post-mortem report highlights brutal assault, confirms multiple injuries, signs of struggleKolkata doctor death: Who is Sanjay Roy? The police commissioner made it clear that a thorough postmortem had been conducted by a three-member team, and the entire process was video-recorded. The CBI has full access to this video, which ensures transparency in the investigation. He reiterated the cooperation between local police and the CBI, stating that the officers had done everything within their limited timeframe to gather evidence properly.

"A three-member team conducted the postmortem, and it is on video. The CBI has access to the postmortem video. There is no doubt as far as transparency is concerned."

He also addressed the circulating rumours directly. "Far too many rumours are floating that have no basis, and based on them, a lot of so-called experts are creating narratives. The case has now gone to the CBI, and let's have faith in the agency. In the very little time we had, our officers tried to do everything possible. We are liable for legal action if anyone in our team has done anything wrong."

He categorically denied informing the victim's family that she had committed suicide and refuted the rumour about the semen found in her body.

"Why is rumour-mongering going on even now? It is wrong that we informed the victim's family that she had committed suicide. It is wrong that 150 grams of semen were found in her body."

He stressed the cooperation between the police and the CBI, stating, "Our officers are cooperating with the CBI with anything that they need. I don't see why it is being spread that we wanted to hush up the matter and finish it. Videography was done, and all evidence was collected in the presence of family and friends."

The case has seen further complications due to acts of vandalism on the RG Kar Hospital campus on August 14. So far, 25 people have been arrested in connection with the damage caused by an unidentified mob to the protest site, vehicles, and public property. Security officials had to intervene to disperse the crowd.

Kolkata Police took to its official social media handle on X to announce the arrests. The post read, "As of now, we have made 25 arrests in relation to the vandalism at RG Kar Hospital on Wednesday night."

"Four more suspects were identified by netizens from our social media posts. The search for the remaining suspects is ongoing. Thank you once again for your support," the post continued.

A CBI team visited RG Kar Medical College Hospital for a digital blueprint of the incident. Four doctors from the hospital have also been summoned by the CBI for interrogation to provide details about the events on the night of the incident. Sanjoy Roy, one of the accused, was taken out of the CBI Special Crime Branch in the CGO complex in Kolkata for a medical examination.

The incident has sparked nationwide protests led by doctors and medical students. Junior doctors and medical students at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad also staged a protest against the case.

Late on August 14, Kolkata Commissioner of Police Vineet Goyal reiterated that the police could not make arrests based solely on circulating rumours. On Thursday, West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar suggested that the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital might have been an effort to destroy evidence.

The victim, a post-graduate trainee doctor, was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Her family has alleged that she was raped and murdered, leading to widespread protests by doctors and medical communities across the nation.

The investigation into this tragic case continues, urging the public to trust in the transparency of the process and avoid spreading or believing unverified information.
