• Open to CBI scanner on our probe: CP

  • Kolkata: Kolkata Police is open to an independent probe by the CBI to ascertain if it indeed had destroyed any evidence, said police commissioner Vineet Goyal on Saturday. The commissioner said the “CBI can investigate anything done on our part to destroy evidence.”

The commissioner also assured that the vandals who attacked RG Kar Hospital at midnight on Wednesday had not reached the third floor at all, and hence had no access to the seminar hall where the rape and murder took place.

“We have already done several things – arranging judicial magistrate, inquest, post-mortem and sending samples for DNA sequencing. Everything has been handed over. Now the CBI will have their own scientific evidence. If there is anything wrong, we are liable. They can investigate anything that we have done to destroy evidence. At least have faith in the other agency if not in us,” said Goyal, reiterating that they are helping the CBI in the probe.

The commissioner said the police have nothing to hide. “The suspicion is often baseless. Someone in the name of Mahapatra was linked to a minister’s son. Even this Mahapatra, who is a son of a primary teacher, has not thrown any evidence. We cannot act without evidence. We have collected evidence — from the accused, forensics and digital evidence. Have some patience,” he said. The CP said misinformation was being spread about why KP lodged an UD case. “Across India, UD cases do not mean only suicide cases. Whether it’s an accident, snakebite or murder, till the complaint reaches us (for the probe to begin), an UD case is initiated. It is changed into a murder case once a complaint arrives,” he said, adding there was no intent to hush up anything.

Additional CP (I) Murlidhar Sharma stated that just like CBI, the KP had begun questioning former RG Kar principal, Sanjib Ghosh. “However, as the case was transferred to CBI, we did not get enough time to question him,” he said Sharma.
