  • Kolkata: Cops, who arrested one Raju Paswan from Nimtala Ghat area on Saturday, later foiled his escape bid from Jorabagan police station. Based on intelligence, cops got to know that Paswan was hiding in the Nimtala Ghat area with firearms.

Led by a sub-inspector, a raid was conducted and Paswan was nabbed. According to sources, police initially thought that Paswan was carrying just a knife, but when he was cornered by cops inside the police station, Paswan whipped out an improvised pistol. He threatened to shoot at anyone who dared to come near him.

In an attempt to take him down, an assistant SI — who was standing near Paswan — decided to lunge towards the accused’s legs. As a result, Paswan fell on the ground and the weapon flung out of his hands. He was immediately put behind bars.

Police said Paswan had escaped from judicial custody on Dec 8, 2008 from the city sessions court, where he was taken for the hearing of a robbery case. He had also escaped from police custody in 2003. Multiple cases are still pending against him.
