  • TMC leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy (left) and Kunal Ghosh (right) NEW DELHI: Veteran Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has called for the CBI to conduct a custodial interrogation of Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal and the former principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital regarding the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor. Roy's demand centers on uncovering the truth behind the purported suicide narrative surrounding the doctor's death on August 9.

The victim's parents were informed over the phone on the morning of August 9 that their daughter had died by suicide at the hospital where she worked.Contradicting this, Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal has claimed that no member of the police force had communicated with the parents about suicide.

The former principal of the medical college, Sandip Ghosh, underwent prolonged CBI interrogation on Friday and Saturday. Roy has expressed suspicions about certain aspects of the case, including the quick demolition work on the fourth floor of the hospital, where the seminar hall is located and the crime allegedly took place. He also questioned the connections of Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer arrested in relation to the case.

Roy emphasised his position on social media, urging the CBI to take decisive action. “CBI must act fairly. Custodial interrogation of Ex Principal and Police Commissioner is a must to know who and why floated suicide story,” he said.

He further questioned the sequence of events and pointed out what he saw as investigative delays. “Why sniffer dog used after 3 days. 100s of such questions. Make them speak,” he added.

The investigation was transferred from Kolkata Police to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court on August 13 following public outcry over the case.

Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh voiced his opposition to Roy's demands, defending the police commissioner's diligence since the crime was reported.

“His (Roy’s) protest against the crime is right, but I vehemently oppose his demands, ” said Ghosh.

The Congress party praised Roy's stance against what they termed "cover-up attempts." “I thank Sukhendu Sekhar Roy for his stand despite being in the ruling party,” said Congress state spokesperson Saumya Aich Roy.

Echoing similar sentiments, CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty noted that the Left party had been making the same demands for days and appreciated Roy’s initiative.

Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, known for his veteran standing in politics, continues to advocate for clarity and justice in the investigation of this tragic case. The involvement of high-ranking officials and concerns raised have drawn significant attention to the procedural integrity of the ongoing probe.
