  • NEW DELHI: Students and junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata continue their protest over the alleged rape and murder of a female colleague on August 9. This incident, which has shocked the nation, has led to protests by doctors in various cities including Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Mumbai. The case has been transferred from the state police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following an order from the Calcutta High Court.

    The tragic event occurred on August 9 when a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered while on duty.The incident has sparked nationwide strikes and protests from the medical community.

    On August 14, the protest site and the hospital campus at RG Kar Medical College were vandalized by a mob, leading to a dispersal by security personnel. To maintain law and order, the Kolkata police have imposed Section 163 around the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for seven days, effective from August 18. The order aims to curb potential unrest due to the ongoing protests.

    The imposition of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, (formerly Section 144 of the CrPC) around the Medical College and Hospital, is a preventive measure by the authorities as they deal with the fallout from this grave incident.

    The incident has resonated deeply within the medical community across India, leading to widespread demonstrations and calls for justice.
