  • Kolkata: Trinamool questioned CBI’s pace of probe in the RG Kar rape-murder case after the party’s two-day protests demanding speedy trial and capital punishment ended on Sunday.

Trinamool Rajya Sabha member Sushmita Dev posted on X: “On August 16, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded that the CBI complete its investigation by August 18, aligning with the original deadline set for the Kolkata Police. However, since taking over the case on August 14, the CBI has remained silent, offering no updates on the investigation’s progress.” She pointed out the only arrest so far had been made by Kolkata Police.

“Why is the investigation by the CBI not proceeding expeditiously? What exactly has the CBI done in the last four days to solve the case?” said Dev. “This is not reassuring at all when it comes to doing justice for the victim. Justice delayed is justice denied. CBI must hold a press conference TODAY and update everyone about the progress of the investigation.”

Bengal BJP said it would hold a week-long programme starting Monday to protest against the attacks on women across Bengal. The party’s state unit will move the Calcutta High Court on Monday to seek permission for protest rallies lined up during the week. “Women in the state are insecure. An Adivasi woman from Burdwan was killed. A woman from the minority community was raped in April this year. Another woman was raped in Malda this month. The CM, who is unable to manage law and order in the state, should step down,” BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said.

While BJP was planning to hold a rally on Monday and observe Raksha Bandhan, the programme will culminate on Friday with a protest march by the women’s wing. On Aug 20, leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari and BJP MLAs will take to the streets. The next day, BJP MPs will join the protest. On Aug 22, a dharna will be held near the state health department’s office. “Locket Chatterjee has been summoned by the cops. We have decided she will not respond now. Police is unable to provide safety to our women. We will not be intimidated,” Majumdar said.
