  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Police has formed a 15-member Special investigation Team (SIT) to probe the vandalism on the R G Kar Hospital premises on the midnight of Aug 14. This team — with officers from detective department and the north division — has been entrusted to probe the four separate FIRs drawn up in this respect — three of them suo moto by police and the last one by the R G Kar administration.

Total number of arrests stood at 32 on Sunday afternoon even as raids are on to nab the other accused. “We have traced some persons who run WhatsApp groups. Notices are being served to them to join the investigations,” said a senior officer.

None of the netas of any political party, including DYFI, summoned in this case has so far turned up at Lalbazar, said cops. Police stated that they will be summoned yet again in the coming days. “We will inform the court if the suspects do not respond to our notices,” said another officer.

Senior officers said they were staying back at night till 3 am to complete questioning of the accused. Commissioner of police, Vineet Goyal, has himself questioned a few of the arrested.

Sources said raids were on to nab a few who have had “ultra-Left’ connections. “We have found certain conversations that took place between such suspects at Academy of Fine Arts and R G Kar. We have also come across people who have claimed allegiance to the Trinamool. We are verifying their claims,” claimed a source.

The accused’s families claim that their wards have been picked up as they were caught in the melee. Debashish Mondol, who works as a delivery person at a grocery store, was one of them. His father said he saw photo of his son standing on a cop barricade only the next day.
