  • Kolkata: Akhtar Ali, deputy superintendent of Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, was called to the state health department on Tuesday. Ali, during his tenure as the deputy superintendent at R G Kar a year ago, had written to the state vigilance commission, alleging the involvement of former principal Sandip Ghosh and other senior officials in financial corruption and nepotism.

The state on Monday formed an SIT to probe the allegations of corruption against Ghosh and financial irregularities at the institute. Kolkata Police on Tuesday registered an FIR against Ghosh, which is believed to be based on Ali’s complaints last July. Among the allegations Ali had listed in a letter dated July 14, 2023, was leasing out govt assets without permission from Swastha Bhavan or College Council, nepotism while selecting vendors, quotation amounting to crores handed to those who were not even ineligible, evading financial rules, taking 20% commission from vendors and failing students. “I reported his various corrupt acts to the vigilance commission, anti-corruption bureau and the health department,” Ali said, adding used syringes, saline bottles, rubber gloves and hand gloves, weighing 500 kg-600 kg, were taken away every other day and recycled by two Bangladeshi nationals. “I was part of the investigation committee but was transferred along with two others the day the report was submitted.”
