  • Kolkata: Trinamool Congress on Tuesday welcomed the Supreme Court’s order and observations in connection with the rape-murder of a PGT intern at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, calling it “timely” and the “need of the hour”.

“The order and observations are meant for the entire country and not just for Bengal. The SC observed that such incidents of crime have been happening across India. We appreciate the steps the SC has taken to prevent such instances across India. It is timely and the need of the hour,” former RS MP Kunal Ghosh said.

Ghosh added that TMC also didn’t have any objection to the deployment of central forces at RG Kar. “The evil forces of Bam-Ram and Shyam have conspired to cause trouble at the hospital. Now, if they are happy with their own forces deployed there, we don’t have any objection,” he said.

Citing the apex court’s plea to agitating doctors to end their ceasework, Trinamool also appealed to the doctors to return to work.

“Lakhs of patients and poor people are suffering because of the ceasework. The chief minister had pleaded about it long back. There are many doctors who want to go to work but can’t because of pressure and then there is another section who themselves don’t want to work and would also not let others work,” Ghosh said.

TMC spokesperson Jay Prakash Majumdar accused a small section of politically motivated doctors of misleading others to continue the stir. “When they are crying slogans of ‘we want justice’, are they doing justice to these poor patients?” he asked.

TMC also appealed to CBI to submit a chargesheet against main accused Sanjay Roy during his next court appearance on Aug 23 and not delay the process to allow political leverage to opposition parties. “The CM had said Kolkata Police will wrap up the investigation by Sunday. But KP didn’t get that time. Now, we want justice from CBI. The SC has asked CBI to submit a report on Aug 22. We demand that CBI submit the chargesheet on Aug 23 and then continue with the investigation,” Ghosh said.

On the SC’s comments on the role of police, Ghosh said: “On that day police had maintained caution and saved hundreds of lives.”
