  • Kolkata: The Supreme Court on Tuesday appealed to the doctors to go back to work but the junior doctors have decided to continue with their protests as of now. They said they saw a flicker of hope after the apex court took up the case suo motu but they wished to see some progress in the probe.

Junior doctors have been staying away from all patient care services since Aug 10.Even as senior doctors are filling up the vacuum, the manpower is severely stretched at all medical colleges.

“We will continue with our agitation at least till Thursday when the CBI is expected to submit its interim report,” said a protesting doctor at RG Kar hospital.

“We want to go back to work and start tending to patients. But we fear that once we go back to work, the investigation will slow down. That is why we need some reliable outcome that would convince us of justice,” said an intern at NRS Medical College.

Right from the first day of protest, the doctors have been claiming that more people were involved in the rape and murder of their colleague. They have been demanding the arrest of ‘real’ culprits.

“As of now, we are in the dark as to where the investigation is heading to. Though we have been demanding a regular update on the probe progress, we have been denied. Let us see if the interim report brings some hope for us,” said another PGT at Medical College Hospital, Kolkata.

While the doctors welcomed the likely deployment of CISF at RG Kar, they demanded proper security coverage for all other medical institutes. “Not only RG Kar, security measures should be enhanced in all other hospitals,” said a PGT at Calcutta National Medical College. The All India Resident & Junior Doctors’ Joint Action Forum also welcomed the SC’s directive on presenting an interim report and said they will withdraw the agitation when the ‘real’ culprits are arrested.
