Kolkata: Bengal BJP president and junior Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday demanded that CM Mamata Banerjee take responsibility for the “breakdown of law and order” in the state and resign. He also called for the removal of police commissioner Vineet Goyal.
“The CM, who is also police minister of the state, should have resigned by now. The questions from the Supreme Court have to be answered by state govt.
No one from Trinamool is ready to answer these questions. The state does not need her as a CM any more,” Majumdar said, sitting on a dharna at Shyambazar to protest the rape and murder of a doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
BJP had earlier moved the HC to secure permission to hold rallies.
“Women in the state have started raising questions over their safety. If we can’t protect women, what will we do with the money in Lakshmir Bhandar?” Majumdar said. Three prominent Bengal BJP netas — Majumdar, Suvendu Adhikari and Dilip Ghosh — were seen together on stage. Party brass in New Delhi had earlier told state seniors BJP had become less visible in the protests.
Bengal BJP also demanded Goyal be axed. “SC has entrusted the central force with R G Kar’s security. It clearly shows that the apex court has lost faith in the state police,” Majumdar said.
Adhikari, who later attended a rally by a BJP-affiliated cultural organisation, Khola Hawa, said Bengal’s people were under a cloud after the horrific crime. “Our heads hang in shame now,” he said.
