Even as the TMC-led West Bengal government faces criticism over the handling of case, the Diamond Harbour MP took to X to assert that trial should be followed by the most severe punishment and not just “empty promises”. “State governments must act and urgently push the Union for a comprehensive anti-rape law that ensures swift and strict justice. Anything less is merely symbolic and tragically ineffective,” he wrote.
Banerjee’s social media post claimed, “900 rapes occurred across different parts of India”. The Diamond Harbour constituency MP added, “With 90 RAPES REPORTED DAILY, 4 EVERY HOUR AND 1 EVERY 15 MINUTES – the urgency for a decisive action is clear,” the post read.
The Supreme Court, after reviewing the report submitted by the Kolkata Police on the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, raised concerns about the timing and sequence of events surrounding the registration of the unnatural death case and the postmortem examination. The court appealed to striking doctors to resume their duties, assuring them that no punitive action would be taken against them.
Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the investigation from the Kolkata Police, has been questioning two key individuals – Sanjay Roy, the civic volunteer who is the primary suspect, and another individual named Ghosh. The CBI has presented the court with a 3D scan of the crime scene, along with relevant documents and video recordings. The crime scene was reconstructed multiple times, and samples were collected with the help of experts. Additionally, the CBI analysed CCTV footage showing the movements of the accused.
