  • Kolkata: The body of four-year-old Arish Alam was fished out of the Bamanghata canal at Anandapur on Thursday morning, 20 hours after his grandmother Rehana Parvin Begum (55) was found murdered at Nonadanga off EM Bypass. The police now have a double murder case on their hand.

The main accused, a cab owner and Rehana’s tenant Vicky Shaw alias Arman Ali was arrested on Wednesday evening and a 17-year-old aide from Tiljala was detained.

According to cops, like every month, Rehana who lived in Rajabazar had gone in Vicky’s car to collect rent from properties she owned in Tiljala, including one at GJ Khan Road. Rehana had left Rajabazar around 3 pm on Tuesday with her grandson Arish in Vicky’s car. Rehana usually returned home by 7 pm. But when she wasn’t back till 11 pm, her daughter dialled her number. Rehana answered and said she was on her way back. When Rehana didn’t return even after midnight, her daughter went to Tiljala. Upon inquiry, she learned that Rehana had left with Vicky much earlier. On informing police, cops went to Vicky’s house in Taltala. When they questioned Vicky about Rehana, he claimed to have dropped her near her house. Not convinced, police detained him and took him to Narkeldanga police station. On Wednesday morning, Rehana’s bloodied body was found in a bush by a deserted road in Anandapur. Rehana’s family identified the body. When the accused was brought to Lalbazar for interrogation, he confessed to the crime. Lalbazar police said that the woman was murdered inside the car by slitting her throat with a knife. The minor accomplice was also in the car. They dumped the body near the bush and abandoned the car.

On Wednesday night, Vicky confessed to having killed the boy as well and dumping the body in the canal. The child’s body was fished out from the water near Bantala bridge on Thursday morning.
