  • Kolkata: The centralised admission portal (CAP) over, it’s now time for decentralisation. Undergraduate colleges will be permitted to conduct de-reservation individually to fill the vacant seats majorly in the reserved categories and to convert into general categories after the mop-up round. The state higher education department has declared the decentralised admission after the mop-up round, promoting colleges to activate stand-alone admission portals even after the start of the first semester classes.

A notice has been issued by the state higher education department stating that the admission process in the undergraduate colleges that are under the centralised admission portal (CAP) will be conducted by individual institutions in an online, stand-alone mode. “Reserved seats vary from one college to another. So, in that case, it is better to allow them to do the process on their own,” said an official.

Colleges have pointed out that the most “difficult task” has been given to them to pursue. Sources said over one lakh students got the seat allotment in the mop up round out of 2.2 lakh candidates who had applied. Though over 25,000 students have already taken admission, there were huge vacancies across colleges. The mop-up round will be live till Sep 7, including an upgrade round. Decentralised admission will start functioning after it is over.

Lady Brabourne College principal Siuli Sarkar said, “We are not very hopeful of getting a good number of students.”New Alipore College principal Jaydeep Sarangi said this will help those who want to shift from one course to another in the same college.
