  • 12 Kolkata: Alumni of Banagram Uchcha Vidyalaya have demanded that the name of RG Kar Medical College former principal Sandip Ghosh be dropped from the institute’s roll of honour, where Ghosh shares space with illustrious former students, including author Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay.

The alumni have submitted an application to the headmaster with the demand.Soumyadip Roy, a former student, said till Ghosh was cleared of the charges levelled against him, his name should be struck off the list. “If we do anything wrong, not only does it taint us but also our school,” he said.

About the roll of honour, the school headmaster, Kunal De, said, “There is a board in our school that displays the names of the institute’s toppers every year, with their boards scores. Sandip Ghosh, who studied here and passed out in 1989, features on the list.” De promised the alumni to discuss their demand with the managing committee.

Ghosh’s batchmate Partha Sarathi Dey said he could not match “Sandip, the friend, with Sandip, the RG Kar ex-principal, if the allegations are to be believed”. “Sandip used to be a good student and we would, at times, seek his help to understand complicated science chapters. He would always help everyone. We were sure he would shine in life,” said Dey, a teacher at another school in Bongaon. “If his name is cleared, he will be welcomed back.”

Biswajit Kundu, another former student, said, “Bongaon is associated with Bibhutibhusan, Rakhaldas Bandyopadhyay and ‘Neeldarpan’. People no longer want to be liked with Sandip Ghosh.”
