• Kolkata doctor rape-murder: BJP workers break barricades; Suvendu Adhikari detained during Swastha Bhawan Abhiyan

  • West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari was detained by the police during the BJP’s Swastha Bhawan Abhiyan in Salt Lake near Kolkata on Thursday.

However, a section of BJP workers broke through police barricades and continued marching towards the Swastha Bhawan under the leadership of other party leaders like state party president Sukanta Majumdar and Dilip Ghosh. The protesters are demanding the resignation of Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in light of the recent rape and murder of an on-duty junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

“They (police) have arrested our leaders, still the BJP workers couldn’t be stopped. All police personnel and other people are supporting us morally. (Kolkata Police Commissioner) Vineet Goyal is an employee, hence he had to do immoral things owing to orders from higher authorities. You cannot stop us,” said Ghosh.

“The CP had said he couldn’t see any sign of external injury after seeing the body (of the rape-murder victim). If you couldn’t see the injury marks, then you are an incompetent officer and should resign immediately. Why was the FIR filed so late? Why was there an attempt to cremate the body quickly… We will not engage in vandalism but we will break the nexus promoting illegal activities in the health department,” said Majumdar.

Before he was detained, Adhikari said, “The Bengal government used full force to prevent justice. The state government has hired the most expensive lawyers. The chief minister has put the full force of her government in the legal battle in the Supreme Court… The public is watching. We would also like the ED (Enforcement Directorate) to take action in this matter.”

“Mamata Banerjee is trying to save thieves and rapists. The entire state is outraged in this matter. The way the Supreme Court has reprimanded the state government in this case, any other head of the state government would have resigned in shame but Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is so infatuated with the chair that she is not willing to leave it,” the state BJP president said.

Other BJP leaders who participated in the rally include Arjun Singh, Agnimitra Pal, Locket Chattopadhyay, Debashree Choudhary, Rupa Gangopadhyay, Rudranil Ghosh, and Hiran Chattopadhyay, among others.
