• HC: Why SIT formed in ’24 for plaint filed in ’23

  • Kolkata: Petitioner and former deputy superintendent of R G Kar Hospital, Akhtar Ali, had moved court urging an ED investigation into the alleged irregularities as his complaint in 2023 against Sandip Ghosh to the anti-corruption branch, West Bengal Human Rights Commission, had not yielded any result.

Rejecting Bengal government’s appeal against a CBI probe, Justice Bharadwaj asked why an SIT was set up on August 16, 2024 when the complaint was made in 2023.

State counsel Amitesh Banerjee submitted that setting up an SIT on Aug 16 was an “autonomous decision, unrelated and unconnected” to Ali’s complaint. The SIT, comprising four senior IPS officers, was tasked with probing irregularities at the hospital since Jan 2021, he added.

Ali’s lawyer, Tarunjyoti Tewari, had alleged in court on Thursday that there was corruption in disposal of medical wastes from the hospital and that a body had gone missing from the hospital morgue on Jan 11, 2023.
