  • Kolkata: A 52-year-old woman, Anjana Biswas, was electrocuted after she accidentally touched an electric pole on her way back home from work — barely a few metres from her residence — on a waterlogged stretch at Barasat in North 24 Parganas on Thursday night. Biswas, a resident of Dakshin Narayan Koka Bagan in Barasat, worked as a non-teaching staff at a private school in Kolkata.

A local youth, who tried to rescue her, also sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment at a nursing home. The woman was rescued only after the power supply was disconnected in the locality by the officials of the local state electric department (WBSEDCL). She was declared brought dead at Barasat District Medical College and Hospital. Locals claimed that the area had been lying inundated for several days. Locals launched an agitation alleging negligence on the part of WBSEDCL officials. On Friday, WBSEDCL started repairing the damaged pole. Cops have started a probe after registering an unnatural death case.
