Kolkata: The Kolkata Police submitted charge sheet in the Udayan Hostel lynching incident, naming seven inmates of the hostel, at the Bankshall Court. The inmates have been charged with murder for allegedly lynching 37-year-old Irshad Alam on suspicion of theft.
Though the charge sheet was filed earlier this week — within 54 days of the incident — the process of framing charges in the court started on Friday.
Security guard, Shankar Burman, has been identified as the main accused in the charge sheet. The accused are in judicial custody till August 28. Cops dropped the names of 10 others, who were arrested previously, from the charge sheet due to lack of evidence. The cops have kept open the option of a supplementary charge sheet. The postmortem report had indicated that the victim — a TV and mobile mechanic from Belgachia — died on June 28 after being hit repeatedly ‘over a long period of time.’
