• Kolkata Rape-Murder: Junior doctors to continue their protest, to meet CBI officials today

  • Junior doctors protesting over the rape and murder of their colleague at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Thursday night said that they would continue their agitation since the Supreme Court’s observation and submission by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) pointed towards a “cover-up” by Kolkata Police during the initial course of investigation.

The West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum, which is spearheading the agitation, said: “As part of our action plan, we will send a delegation to the CBI office on Friday. We will go there to inform them about some of our concerns, to learn about the progress of the investigation, and to present some proposals.”

“The Honourable Supreme Court has raised several questions regarding Day Zero of the crime, and significant ambiguities have been observed concerning the sequence of events on that day. The Supreme Court has noted that there is a notable lack of clarity regarding when the unnatural death was declared, when the inquest was conducted, and ultimately when the FIR was filed. The Honorable Justice also mentioned that the role of the administration following the events is something he has not seen in his 30-year career…,” a press release issued by the doctors’ group said.

It added: “Even the CBI has indicated that when they took over the case five days later, by then, significant alterations had been made at the crime scene, which has made their investigation process more difficult.”

“From all this, we have arrived at the conclusion that our long-standing suspicion about the attempt to cover up the evidence was indeed accurate,” the doctors stated.

Claiming that the “evil nexus supported at RG Kar over the last three to four years led to the rape and murder incident”, the junior doctors said: “…the atmosphere of fear that this nexus has created in every medical college to prevent any movement from arising clearly indicates a significant role of this malevolent conspiracy behind all these events.”

The doctors stated that till the criminal nexus remains active and unless those responsible for the horrific incident are identified and punished, none of the “doctors and students at RG Kar are safe”.

“Therefore, we appeal to the CBI and the Supreme Court to identify, investigate, and bring to justice all those who are creating obstacles on our path to obtaining justice and those who are using the politics of fear to control and suppress movements in all medical colleges,” the release read.

Meanwhile, they also appealed to the general public to stand by them, while they called for a mass convention on Saturday. “We will soon announce the location and time for the event,” the statement added.

Referring to the Wednesday’s meeting with top officials of the state Health Department that led to the transfer of three top officials of RG Kar hospital, the group said: “…it has also become clear that without the influence of some strong, all-powerful malevolent force, the Swasthya Bhawan would be unable to take any action. Although the Swasthya Bhawan has yielded under the pressure of the movement, the time it took them to agree to even the slightest demands clearly indicates that not only Sandip Ghosh, but a larger, more sinister conspiracy is active behind him.”
