  • Kolkata: Suhrita Paul, who was transferred from R G Kar and was newly appointed as the principal of Barasat Govt Medical College and Hospital, faced intense resistance from students, junior doctors, and local residents as she attempted to assume her new role on Saturday morning. The agitators had blocked the entrance to the college and shouted “go back” slogans.Later, cops brought the situation under control.

According to a hospital official, Paul had encountered fierce opposition even on Thursday, when she had attempted to take charge and had to leave. The protesters had demanded her departure.

Despite the unrest, sources in the medical college claimed that Paul had officially joined the institute on Friday. A senior official claimed that a large contingent of police, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Combat Force members, led by senior district police officers, were deployed on Friday to dispel tensions on the campus.

Paul had been transferred to Barasat after being removed from her previous position at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, following protests by junior doctors in the wake of the rape-murder of the 31-year-old PGT doctor.
