  • Kolkata: Mayor Firhad Hakim on Saturday alleged that the BJP and the Left were politicising the rape and murder of the PGT doctor at RG Kar.

Hakim pointed out that the RG Kar crime was extremely grave and was a concern even among his family members. “The heinous crime has shaken our conscience. My granddaughter, too, has expressed her concern at this tender age.She asked why the incident had taken place and expressed safety concerns. My daughters are also upset. But the attempt to politicize the crime by BJP and Left is equally bad. They are trying to mislead people,” he said.

Hakim said it was unfortunate that rape, a social disease, was on the rise across India. “We need to combat the disease by not only enacting stricter laws but also by teaching men to respect women,” the mayor said.

Hakim said the people of Bengal were aware of a joint conspiracy hatched by the BJP and the Left, who wanted to destabilize the state.

He came down heavily on the Left parties, saying that their existence had come to an end, and they now depended on the BJP to resurface in Bengal politics over an issue that went beyond politics.

“The BJP leaders are now engaged in a game of back-door politics to wrest power in Bengal. We are aware of this and will foil such attempts,” he added.
