  • HOWRAH: A pharmacist and a woman, involved in an extramarital affair, were arrested on Saturday at Munshi Danga in Howrah's Bankra for allegedly causing the death of her husband Nasim Sardar by administering cancer drugs for viral fever that led to organ failure.

After the death of Nasim, a garment merchant, on Friday, his neighbours assaulted his wife Sahina Parvin and handed her over to the police. They also reportedly vandalized and set the pharmacist Sheikh Morselim's house, medicine shop and bike on fire. As tension escalated on Saturday morning, cops and RAF personnel were deployed to control the situation.

Locals alleged that when Nasim had been suffering from viral fever for about three weeks, Sahina took him to Morselim. Later, Morselim's staff Asif delivered some medicine to Sahina and she began giving it to Nasim. But instead of improving, his condition worsened. On Thursday, Nasim became unconscious and his relatives admitted him to a private hospital. Doctors at the hospital became suspicious and wanted to see the previous prescription as the victim's organs started failing. He died on Friday morning.

When the doctor wanted to see a sample of the medicine, which the victim had been administered earlier, Sahina claimed that all the medicines had been consumed by him. The doctor suspected a conspiracy and informed Domjur police station. Police sources later said oral chemotherapy drugs were being given to Nasim.

Laila Begum, a neighbour of the victim and a member of Bankra Panchayat Samity, said, "Nasim had been suffering from viral fever for the last 21 days. For the first one week, he was given some medicine but as the fever refused to go, his wife took him to the pharmacist. Doctor told cops that the pharmacist had administered him oral chemotherapy for 15 days, thus leading to his death due to multi organ failure."

Cops interrogated Sahina, Morselim and Asif and found out that the victim had been given cancer medicines. A cop said that the two accused had been arrested while the victim's viscera would undergo forensic examination. "We have started a probe into the allegation and we are waiting for the viscera report," said the officer.
