  • Kolkata: Trinamool Congress’s former Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh on Sunday urged the party’s netas to battle BJP and CPM’s “disinformation campaign” targeting Trinamool on the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case. “You are what you are because of the party. It is time to fight this misinformation and falsehood,” Ghosh told reporters, adding: “The opposition is fanning this emotive issue to suit their political motives. This needs to be combated, not just by a few, but by all netas.”

Explaining TMC’s position, Ghosh said: “We are one with all when it is a demand for justice. We also demand that the guilty be punished. This is an unpardonable, bestial crime. This is an emotive issue. But the opposition, mostly BJP and CPM, are trying to misdirect this emotion against the party and CM Mamata Banerjee. This needs to be fought. The probe is with CBI, a central agency. The legal case is with Supreme Court in Delhi. And yet, under the guise of seeking justice, they are targeting CM Banerjee and the party.”

Urging netas to fight back, Ghosh said: “If party supporters and workers are trying to counter the misinformation campaign on social media and on the ground, what stops politicians from doing so? You do not have to test waters, fight back for the party.”

Speaking to reporters after a party conclave of its digital teams, the former MP also spoke on the CBI raids. “We saw CBI running around on a corruption case. If there was corruption, it should be probed. But our basic question remains only one thing — what is the outcome of the rape-murder probe? Kolkata Police had arrested an accused within 12 hours, now the question is whether there was anyone else. We need answers for the rape and murder first. It is this deliberate delay by CBI in the rape-murder probe that is fuelling misinformation and falsehood. Is that CBI’s final aim? To help feed these to suit someone’s political ends?” Ghosh said.

“Several netas are countering falsehoods. But others are mute on social media. Some hold very important posts. The eagerness with which politicians queue up for posts and MP-MLA tickets should also reflect in their fight for the party,” he added.
