  • Kolkata: The two kidneys of a 34-year-old deceased donor were transplanted into two patients in two different Kolkata hospitals on Sunday. With this donation, the city has registered 12 deceased organ donations this year. Both the recipients will be under close observation in intensive care for the next few days.

According to sources, Pratik Agarwal, the deceased donor was admitted to Medica Superspecialty Hospital a few days ago after he had an acute intra-cerebral haemorrhage.Despite intensive medical assistance, Agarwal did not recover. After doctors saw signs of brain stem death, his family members from North 24-Parganas were counselled to donate his viable organs.

After two mandatory tests confirmed brain death, ROTTO (east) was informed. During organ viability assessment, doctors found only the two kidneys fit for transplant. ROTTO allocated one to RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences for a 33-year-old recipient, while the other one was received by a 53-year-old man at Apollo Multispecialty Hospital.

Sources said the next 72 hours will be crucial for the organ recipients as post-transplant care is equally important.

The previous deceased organ donation was on July 31 when Mousumi De, a 54-year-old resident of Bankura was declared brain dead at SSKM’s Trauma Care Centre. While 2023 recorded the best tally of 16 donations since the state registered its first organ donation in 2010, this was the 12th donation in the city this year. Due to better coordination with NOTTO, the state is also sharing organs with hospitals in other states if a matching recipient is not found within the state hospitals.
